Up for auction is this awesome Gibson Historic Series 1954 Les Paul Goldtop. This special quality build offers all of the great tone, sustain and mojo of the original ’54 classisc at a fraction of the cost. Purchased new by me in 2000, this guitar has been very lightly played in my home and is in immaculate condition.
Let’s start with the finish. The flawless gold top oozes classic Gibson character. This is complemented by the gorgeous mahogany back, sides and neck. This is THE guitar that everyone immediately recognizes.
The binding and pickup control switch have been beautifully aged to give this his great guitar a stunning vintage look. Weighing in at 9 lbs 4 oz, this is a rock solid instrument that feels like it really means business when you strap it on.
In my opinion there is nothing quite as stylish as the classic Gibson open-book headstock with the script signature of Les Paul. There is no substitute for the real thing.
The bound mahogany neck is graced with a rosewood fretboard and mother of pearl trapezoid inlays. It has a very comfortable, rounded C contour. This baby is kept in tune with premium quality Gibson Deluxe tuning machines.
OK, great looking guitar with tons of character, but how does it play and sound? The ’54 is equipped with P-90 single coil pickups rather than the more familiar humbuckers. This is the classic Gibson single coil that is known for its big mid range when used clean and its thick creamy grind when pushing an amp hard. In 1954 the Les Paul was equipped with a wrap around tailpiece rather than the more familiar tune-o-matic style which became available in 1956. The wrap around has the advantage of a very solid bridge which directly connects with the guitar body. In my opinion this allows for better sustain characteristics than a tun-o-matic. While the wrap around does not allow the degree of precise intonation adjustment of a tune-o-matic, intonation has not been an issue with this guitar at all. Overall this is a HUGE tone monster that really delivers that classic Les Paul P-90 sound.
As with all Les Pauls, this special Goldtop is equipped with four speed roller knobs that control volume and tone for each pickup.
Of course, a stunning guitar like this has to be well protected. And it is with this beautiful hardshell case with the old style plush pink lining and silky apron.
